Graham Poll's Official Line: Referees should be tested after a right balls-up at Sunderland

Commentators and analysts should take a course on the laws of the game. Then they would not make so many mistakes.Of course the Sunderland goal shouldn't have been allowed. The beach ball should have been deemed an outside agent and any such item which interferes with play should result in adrop ball from where the interference takes place.  That is law, and the baffling thing for me is that something so basic is not identified correctly by all active match officials. They must have seen the ball deflect off the beach ball and fly into the net, so why was the goal allowed to stand? It is interesting that the vast majority of countries around the world re-register their referees each year only after they have passed a physical test and a 'laws of the game' test. In England, referees are not tested on law. Maybe it is time that they were.
