Graham Poll: Webb was right to send off Steven Gerrard but he should not have awarded penalty

World Cup final referee Howard Webb appeared unsure about the degree of contact when Dimitar Berbatov went down rather easily after a Daniel Agger challenge in the first minute.[LNB] Given Webb's recent advice to Blackpool players, allegedly telling them they should 'make the most' of fouls, you cannot blame the Bulgarian for falling over, because there was slight contact.[LNB] Right decision: Webb shows a red card to Gerrard[LNB] Webb's body language indicated he was in two minds. If that was the case, he should not have awarded a penalty because referees are told not to give a decision unless they are 100 per cent convinced.[LNB] Looking at his body language again in the 32nd minute, he was sure Steven Gerrard should be sent off following a reckless challenge with excessive force. It was the type of tackle Gerrard used to make but seemed to have eradicated from his game.[LNB] The red card was correct and, hopefully, it will remind the Liverpool captain to stay in control when tackling.[LNB] Rash challenge: Steven Gerrard dives in on Michael Carrick[LNB] Gerrard's challenge was different to the one by Newcastle's Cheik Tiote at Stevenage on Saturday.[LNB] To be fair to referee Andre Marriner, at full pace it looked wild, but with the benefit of replays it was clear Tiote had scooped the ball away and a yellow card would have been more appropriate because of the nature of the tackle.[LNB] Marriner seemed unsure about which colour card to show and, again, where doubt exists, the benefit of any doubt should have gone to Tiote.
