Graeme Souness issues a withering verdict on Rafa Benitez's Liverpool

Graeme Souness, the former Liverpool star and manager, offered a damning assessment of Rafa Benitez and his team on Tuesday night. Speaking on Sky TV, Souness said: ‘They were so predictable. You are looking for imagination and spark, but it wasn’t there. It was plod, plod, plod. Just hoping, just hoping for a mistake from Lyon. There was no real imagination. ‘Without Gerrard and Torres, they look a very ordinary group of players. ‘It’s no good (Benitez) saying I haven’t had enough money. If you’ve been there five years, brought in 68 players, you should have more than that after five years. You should be able to cope better with losing two players.’ Souness knows about the demands of being Liverpool manager when the pressure is on. And he insists you get more of a chance at Liverpool than any other major club in England. Now Benitez faces his arch rival Sir Alex Ferguson on Sunday and Souness added: ‘Manchester United is either the best possible game or the worst possible game. If they turn them over, this is forgotten. If they lose, the blow to the football club will be enormous.’
