    Gerrard suffers thigh injury

    06 Aug 2008 - 07:34:17

Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard is a major doubt for the first leg of their Champions League third qualifying round tie against Standard Liege due to a thigh injury.

Gerrard suffered a thigh strain in the 4-1 friendly victory over Norwegian side Valerenga and is set to be sidelined for around a week, making it unlikely that he will face the Belgian champions next week.

Manager Rafa Benitez told the club's official website: "It is a thigh strain. We need to wait, but it could be one week."

Meanwhile, Benitez was content with his side's latest display, which saw them win comfortably thanks to goals from Fernando Torres, Xabi Alonso, David Ngog and Yossi Benayoun.

The Spaniard added: "It was another good work-out. It was a good game, with four goals for us and good play.

"But the players aren't 100 per cent yet, that would be difficult right now.

"The other team were fitter than us, but you could see we were passing, pressing and the understanding between the players was better. I am really pleased with the result.

"Normally when you have quality, when you are playing well and creating chances, you will score goals."
