Gerrard pens new Reds deal
03 Apr 2009 - 09:42:13
Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard has agreed a two-year contract extension which will keep him at Anfield until summer 2013.
Gerrard, 28, has been instrumental in the Reds' push for domestic and European honours this season.
The midfielder has scored 21 goals in 38 games for Rafael Benitez's side and the news of his extension will provide a timely boost as the Reds look to overtake Manchester United in the race for the Premier League crown.
Liverpool will top the table on Saturday night should they defeat Fulham at Craven Cottage and the news of Gerrard's contract extension has added to the current feelgood factor on Merseyside.
"This is fantastic news for the club," Benitez told the club's official website.
"Steven has once again shown his commitment and it was an easy deal to agree."
Meanwhile, Benitez now expects the England international to spend his entire career at Anfield.
The midfielder made his first-team debut in 1998 and has gone on to make over 480 career appearances for the Reds.
"As soon as we offered him the option he said yes. There were no problems at all. He wants to stay for life," added Benitez.
"This deal sends out another clear message that we are moving forward as a club.
"To know we have a player of Steven's quality with us for many more years is a great boost for the club and the fans.
"He is clearly a player who inspires those around him and even though he is playing very well at the moment, I still think his best years are ahead of him."
