Gerrard news lifts Liverpool
23 Feb 2009 - 13:18:44
Liverpool have received a boost with the news that Steven Gerrard will travel to Spain for Tuesday's Champions League clash with Real Madrid.
The Reds skipper has been out of action for three weeks with a hamstring problem but came through an initial fitness test at a specially arranged training session on Monday morning.
He will now head out to Madrid for the first leg of the last 16 tie with the rest of the squad on Monday afternoon.
"Steven will be in the squad. He was okay in training this morning," manager Rafael Benitez told the club's official website.
"It was a special training session so we were not testing him one hundred per cent, but he trained okay so we will see."
Liverpool could now welcome both Gerrard and Xabi Alonso back to the centre of their midfield for the meeting with the Spanish champions.
Gerrard was injured and Alonso suspended as the Reds laboured to a 1-1 draw with Manchester City on Sunday which dented their Premier League title ambitions.
