Gerrard in clear over Brown
16 Mar 2010 - 14:59:52
Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard will face no action from the Football Association over his clash with Michael Brown during the 4-1 win over Portsmouth on Monday evening.
Gerrard was seen to aim an elbow at Brown as the pair raced toward the Pompey penalty area, with referee Stuart Attwell giving a free-kick but opting not to caution the Reds skipper at the time.
Attwell has now confirmed that he penalised Gerrard for the incident, meaning that a retrospective three-match ban for violent conduct is out of the question.
Pompey boss Avram Grant had played down talk of further action against Gerrard, saying after the game: "I didn't see it. I will speak with Michael Brown and then I will tell you.
"They told me the referee was four metres away from this, so I think the referee needs to see from four metres what I didn't from 40 metres.
"Personally I like Steven Gerrard. I think he is a good player and a fair player."
