Gerrard hails Reina
02 May 2007 - 08:22:38
Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard described Jose Reina as the best goalkeeper in the world as the Reds reached their second Champions League Final in three seasons with a thrilling semi-final success against Premiership rivals Chelsea.
Daniel Agger's goal midway through the first half of the second leg at Anfield cancelled out Joe Cole's strike in the first leg opener and the match was eventually settled by a penalty shoot-out.
Reina saved penalties by Arjen Robben and Geremi and the Reds won 4-1 when Dirk Kuyt slotted home his spot-kick.
Liverpool had beaten Chelsea at the semi-final stage of the competition in 2005 and Gerrard said: "The first time round was special but to do it again after being a goal down to a magnificent team like Chelsea, it's unbelievable. But together we achieved it.
"The atmosphere helped, the managers' tactics, everything was spot on. But we crossed the line and we stuck together.
"We have the best goalkeeper in the world in Pepe Reina. But all credit to Chelsea.
"Jose Mourinho has been a credit to English football, but he makes us laugh now and then.
"I think he was a bit disrespectful calling us a little club. Two finals in three years - not bad for a little club."
