Gerrard denies affray charge

Liverpool and England midfielder Steven Gerrard has denied being involved in a fight outside a Southport nightclub.

Gerrard, 28, formally pleaded not guilty to affray when he appeared at Liverpool Crown Court on Friday morning.

The Liverpool captain is accused of being part of a group that injured businessman Marcus McGee at the Lounge Inn, Southport, in the early hours of December 29, 2008.

Gerrard denied affray during a brief court appearance alongside six other men who face the same charge.

Earlier on Friday, the Reds confirmed their skipper had agreed a two-year contract extension which will keep him at Anfield until summer 2013.

The influential midfielder has scored 21 goals in 38 games for Rafael Benitez's side this season.
