Gerrard cleared of affray
24 Jul 2009 - 13:32:08
Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has been found not guilty of affray following an incident in a Merseyside bar in December 2008.
The 29-year-old England international midfielder admitted hitting Marcus McGee in the Lounge Inn, Southport.
However, a jury at Liverpool Crown Court agreed that Gerrard was acting in self-defence.
The footballer was the only one of seven men to be cleared over the violence that occurred in the early hours of 29 December 2008 following Liverpool's 5-1 win against Newcastle United.
The trouble flared when Gerrard attempted to change the music on the CD player and became embroiled in an altercation with the man holding the control, McGee, who lost a tooth and suffered facial cuts in the ensuing violence.
