Gerrard charge is dropped

An assault charge against England and Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard has been dropped.

The Reds skipper is still facing a charge of affray in connection with an alleged incident outside a Southport nightclub in December 2008.

Gerrard was celebrating his side's 5-1 win over Newcastle United on December 29 when a disturbance occurred outside the Lounge Inn nightspot in the town.

Afterwards, a 34-year-old man required medical treatment for facial injuries.

Last month, Gerrard denied an assault charge when he appeared at North Sefton Magistrates' Court.

He will now face an affray charge, alongside six other defendants, at Liverpool Crown Court on April 3.
