    Gerrard ahead of schedule

    18 Feb 2009 - 09:15:31

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard could make a shock return to action in this weekend's Premier League game against Manchester City.

The 27-year-old midfielder tore a hamstring in the FA Cup fourth round replay defeat at Everton two weeks ago and was not expected to return to action until the Champions League clash with Real Madrid.

However, Gerrard's injury is responding well to treatment and he could feature against Mark Hughes' side on Sunday.

Benitez told the Reds' official website: "He is improving. In these situations each day is important. He is working with the medical staff and is progressing.

"Normally he is a player who recovers quickly. He needs less time than other players.

"I was surprised because the Spanish press said he'd play some minutes this weekend and then play against Real Madrid, but the truth is we don't know yet.

"Maybe he could be on the bench against City but we don't know.

"He wants to play every single game. He knows the game against City will be very important, and also the Real Madrid one too."
