Steven Gerrard is in line for a surprise return for Liverpool

on Sunday.

Gerrard, out since sustaining a hamstring injury in the FA Cup defeat at Everton

on February 4, had been targeted for a comeback in next Wednesday's Champions League tie at Real Madrid, but boss Rafa Benitez is hopeful his skipper could play in Sunday's home game with Manchester City

.

Benitez said: 'He's improving. Normally, he recovers quickly. Maybe he could be on the bench against City.'
