Gerrard makes scoring return

Steven Gerrard swept away the stress of his courtroom battle to score a trademark goal on his return to action as a Liverpool XI drew 2-2 at Tranmere. Just hours after being found not guilty of affray by a jury at Liverpool Crown Court, the Reds captain made a surprise appearance at Prenton Park. In a Liverpool XI otherwise comprised of reserves and youth players, Gerrard scored his team's first equaliser, blasting home a low drive from outside the box, after Chris Shuker`s opener just before half-time. Gerrard's trial had lasted a week and forced him to miss Liverpool's Far East pre-season tour. His lack of fitness and match practice meant it was decided he should play against Tranmere where he completed 63 minutes. But just 13 minutes after his departure, Tranmere took the lead again with a header from defender Gareth Edds. Liverpool hit back with a penalty equaliser in injury-time when former Anfield youngster John Welsh brought down Adam Hammill in the box, with the 21-year-old substitute getting up to score from the spot himself.
