Fowler top of Barnes' hit-list as former Liverpool hero aims for success at Tranmere

Robbie Fowler is being lined up for a dramatic return to Merseyside before the new season starts by his former Liverpool team-mate John Barnes. Fowler, 34, became North Queensland Fury's marquee signing in February and is due to make his Australian debut later this month but it could prove a brief stay after Barnes, now manager of League One side Tranmere Rovers, made his bold move. The chance of a return to familiar territory is bound to appeal to former England striker Fowler, particularly with Barnes and another ex-Liverpool pal, Jason McAteer, at the helm at Prenton Park. There are also fears the striker's family have failed to settle Down Under, while he has had a succession of groin and hip injuries. His goalscoring exploits made him one of Liverpool's biggest crowd favourites, and he had established himself as the fourth most prolific finisher in Barclays Premier League history - with 161 goals in 372 games - by the time his second spell at Anfield ended two years ago. Barnes replaced the sacked Ronnie Moore at Tranmere last month and wants to waste no time making his mark at a club who just missed out on the play-offs last season, with a spectacular transfer coup high on his list of priorities. Tranmere have already lost defensive midfielder Steve Jennings, 24, to Scottish Premier League side Motherwell.
