“I think he doesn’t need any encouragement," he told ITV Sport. "I think he’s a brilliant goalkeeper who is doing really well.
“It’s a team, you know, that also at times has to do better for the goalkeeper."
The former Liverpool goalkeeper's comments come in response to Jamie Carragher's criticism of the young German following defeat at AFC Bournemouth last weekend.
It will be interesting to see if Jurgen Klopp keeps faith with Karius when the Reds face West Ham on Sunday, or whether he reverts to Simon Mignolet, who has been in better form of late.
