Five reasons why Gerrard snubbing Chelsea was best for all involved

Jose Mourinho and some Chelsea fans may bemoan Steven Gerrard’s not signing for Chelsea but for the football community and possibly Gerrard things worked out just fine. Here is five reasons why we should all be happy the move did not happen.

1) There would be no curtailing of Jose Mourinho’s ego

The Portuguese manager is already sharp-tongued as it is. There is no telling what levels he would get to if he had managed to poach the best player from a major rival and prove that the lure of himself and Chelsea Football Club is too great to resist.

2) Either one of Lampard and Gerrard would have had a less illustrious career

Both Lampard and Gerrard are best known for their contributions to their teams in the attacking half but sadly with Mourinho’s tactic of one of the central midfielders falling back to shield the defence, one of these two English talents would have had to sacrifice their flair.

3) There would be no story of Istanbul

Without Steven Gerrard, Liverpool were probably not going to be able to stage the “Miracle of Istanbul” and give the Liverpool fans something to remember forever. Even reaching the Final would have been a tough ask without the midfield sensation yet he was there and because of him all English fans had something to celebrate on that night.

4) Gerrard’s personality just doesn't fit with Chelsea

To be a Chelsea star you need a certain level of ruthlessness, a bit of pragmatism and an at least slightly scandalous lifestyle. Stevie has very little of all that. He seems more like the traditional English gentlemanly type. The type that would be consistently taken advantage of at Chelsea, the type that will never fit in, the type that would struggle to succeed.

5) There would be no slip to put a smile on Chelsea fans faces

Without Gerrard at Liverpool to confront Demba Ba, there would be no calamitous slip to hand the title to Manchester City. The slip that put tears in the legend’s eyes. The slip that set the world of football trolling ablaze.

In as much as Gerrard may have been good at Chelsea, he still had more to offer elsewhere and we will remember him for his contributions to Liverpool and English football as a whole.
