Fifa 16: 10 things to take note of from the new gameplay trailer

16 June 2015 11:01

Every year we think it can’t look any more realistic, and every year they give us just that little bit extra. We’re of course talking about Fifa 16, after a new gameplay trailer was revealed at E3.

The big news had already been announced – that for the first time Fifa 16 will include women’s teams – but here’s a few other things we learned/noticed.

1. Pele could describe just about anything and give us goosebumps

Anything. An autopsy, a nasty rash – it doesn’t matter how disgusting, Pele would be able to make it feel epic, just like he does with this narration.

2. Are we sure this isn’t the actual Nou Camp?

If there’s one thing people complain about every time there’s a new Fifa released, it’s that the graphics haven’t really changed at all. They certainly look a lot more realistic this year though – and that’s not taking into account the other things EA say they’ve developed this year to give us a better experience.

3. They’re trying to imitate life

Remember that crazy skill Yanick Bolasie pulled on Christian Eriksen last season? Well it seems like this is Fifa’s attempt at recreating it. That’s definitely a number 23 on the Tottenham players shorts, and Bolasie is pretty much the only player who wears black boots any more. Except Lee Cattermole – and we don’t think that’s meant to be him.

4. And Bolasie’s not the only superstar whose exploits are being recreated

You know which goal this is supposed to be. Bolasie finds himself in decent company.

5. But then again, maybe it’s not so realistic

Just look at how full the Etihad is – they’ve clearly done no research here.

6. Are we going to hear the players making noises now?

In the moment that Jordan Henderson crunches Juan Cuadrado, we can hear the Colombian groan as he hits the floor. It’s not the only place in the trailer where noise from players can be heard – but we imagine this is somewhere where art is less likely to imitate life. After all, you don’t want your child hearing Jack Wilshere effing and blinding on a game as well on YouTube.

7. And… the grass?

Yep, we definitely heard the swoosh of a ball travelling on wet grass during the trailer. It seems Fifa 16 will be a treat for all the senses.

8. EA say defending is getting a revamp

Last year saw the goalkeepers get more “intelligent”, and it looks like the same thing is being done this year with the defence.

EA say defenders, or at least the agile ones, will have more freedom of movement – a big help when facing the better attackers. They also say that your team will defend more as a unit – great news for anyone who’s been frustrated with holding midfielders wandering high up the pitch over recent editions of the game.

On top of that, they say they’ve made defending more fun – with new slide, standing, and “fake” tackles. We’re a little confused about that last one too.

9. The midfield will also have a new feel

Fifa 16 will have a new mechanic, according to EA, which will allow passing with more precision and purpose, to teammates who make smarter runs.

To counter this, the midfielders will also be better at closing down space and blocking channels. It looks set to be a tactical battle.

10. And you’ll also be able to create more “magic”

EA are introducing something called “no touch dribbling”, which will allow you to “Free yourself from the ball to buy time, create separation, feint, and blow by your defender just as Messi does when he is at his best”.

They’ve described it as “near limitless creativity on the ball”, which is a big claim to make and one we hope the game will be able to live up to.

EA have also improved the crossing and finishing. You get the impression that Fifa 16 has been created as an all-round better game, rather than just focusing on specific aspects like last year – but, like always, we won’t know until it comes out. Roll on September 25.
