The Spanish international's previous deal, signed when he moved from Atletico Madrid two years ago, also ran until 2013 but entailed a significant pay cut from the contract he had been offered to remain at the Vicente Calderon. That has now been rectified and his new contract is likely to bring his wages, thought to be around £90,000-a-week, into line with Steven Gerrard, the club's top earner on around £120,000-a-week. Benitez said: 'Fernando is one of the best strikers in the game today and, at his age, can only get better. Every major side would want him in their team, but he has shown how much he wants to achieve success at Liverpool by committing his future to the club. He's a special talent, but still has the hunger to improve his game." The Liverpool manager has made it clear he wants the bulk of his side's transfer business taken care of in time for the start of pre-season training in July and Torres joins Daniel Agger, Dirk Kuyt and Gerrard himself in committing their long-term futures to the club. Benitez, who himself signed a new deal in March, has made his priority securing the spine of the team he currently possesses and is likely to offer new terms to both Alvaro Arbeloa and goalkeeper Jose Reina, before he turns his attention to procuring reinforcements.
