Fergie's fall-guy: Sir Alex pours scorn on Liverpool boss Rafa and his rants

14 March 2009 12:27
Sir Alex Ferguson reignited his battle with Rafa Benitez yesterday when he mocked the Spaniard for that extraordinary outburst back in January. [LNB]Benitez, reading off a sheet of paper, had accused the Manchester United[LNB]manager of undermining the Respect campaign and Ferguson responded by calling his comments 'disturbed' and 'ridiculous'. [LNB]On the eve of the United-Liverpool[LNB]showdown, which Ferguson considers the biggest game of the season, he took it a stage further. [LNB]'I would need to read more of Freud before I could really understand all that,' he said. 'I don't know where it came from and I'm not really interested. It never bothered me and it doesn't bother me now.' Maybe that was the problem. My English is not the best so perhaps I will have to practise a bit more. [LNB]'I don't know whether he fully understood what I was saying. Maybe I will ask him after the game. Certainly, I will shake hands with him and then we will see what happens. [LNB]'This will be my first contact with him since I presented all those facts. I have not spoken with him or seen him since then. [LNB]'He should have been able to follow what I was saying, because facts are facts. You cannot change them and it seemed clear enough. [LNB]'I have a lot of respect for him. He is a big manager with a big team. That is clear, but at the same time I have to defend my club. They were facts, not opinions, and surely everyone can see that.' [LNB] 'Facts are facts': Benitez[LNB]Ferguson predicted a match of great intensity and more championships for a team already chasing the 11th Barclays Premier League crown during his incredible reign. [LNB]'This will be fierce,' he said. [LNB]'Competitive, a wonderful atmosphere, a game you don't want to miss and a game I won't be telling my team to hold back in. [LNB]'They want to win this championship and I think this team will win more. What happens this year is part of the future, which looks very good for our young players. There is evidence they can stay together for some years.' [LNB]Liverpool striker Dirk Kuyt said: 'We cannot give up on anything. If we can win it would keep our chances alive and put pressure on them, but we'd still have to hope they make mistakes.'  Manchester United v Liverpool: It doesn't get any bigger or better than this[LNB]Bullish Benitez ready to show the gap between Liverpool and Manchester United is closing[LNB]Ferguson stands by Rooney over Manchester United striker's 'I hate Liverpool' jibe[LNB]English football's greatest rivalry: A trip down memory lane as Manchester United and Liverpool square up[LNB]What they say about the biggest rivalry in English football[LNB]MANCHESTER UNITED v Liverpool: Sir Alex to make changes for crunch clash[LNB]Rooney: I hate Liverpool and Man United will put an end to their title dreams[LNB]LIVERPOOL FC NEWS FROM ACROSS THE WEB[LNB]MANCHESTER UNITED FC NEWS FROM ACROSS THE WEB[LNB][LNB]
