Ex Anfield misfit Sissoko could scupper Mascherano's dream Barca move

Javier Mascherano's hopes of joining Barcelona could be scuppered by a former Liverpool misfit. The European champions had hinted they would be interested in signing Mascherano in the future, despite missing out on him in the summer transfer window. But with Reds boss Rafa Benitez previously indicating that even £40million would not tempt him to sell, Barca are looking elsewhere with a view to bolstering their midfield. The latest player to be linked with a move to the Nou Camp is Juventus midfielder Momo Sissoko, who struggled to establish himself at Anfield during a two-and-a-half-year spell before leaving for Turin in January 2008. The Mali international has not played so far this season. His absence has officially been explained as a metatarsal injury, though there are suggestions that he is in a financial dispute with his club. The biggest barrier to him moving to Spain in the winter window is his expected call-up for the Africa Cup of Nations in January. Barca head coach Pep Guardiola is already set to lose holding midfielders Seydou Keita and Yaya Toure to the tournament. The club maintain an interest in unsettled Argentina captain Mascherano, who has displayed indifferent form so far this season, and Arsenal skipper Cesc Fabregas.
