Europa League Team News: Liverpool, Villa and City in action

19 August 2010 07:24
Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has confirmed that goalkeeper Joe Hart will retain his place between the posts in Romania.

However, City will be without summer signings Aleksandar Kolarov and Jerome Boateng through injury for the Europa League play-off first leg against FC Timisoara. Hart was outstanding in the goalless draw against Tottenham on Saturday after being handed the jersey in preference to Shay Given.

Mancini sees no reason to change things, which could push the experienced Republic of Ireland international closer to the exit door. "Joe Hart will play, " said the City boss.

"I had a very difficult choice to make before the Spurs game because I have two world-class goalkeepers. It is difficult for one of them to sit on the bench. I respect Shay Given a lot. He is a good man and I want him to stay, but I also understand any decision he might make."

Former Lazio left back Kolarov damaged ankle ligaments at White Hart Lane and it is unclear how long he will be sidelined for. Boateng, who arrived from Hamburg, is likely to be out of action for a couple of weeks after the defender suffered a deep cut on the inside of his knee.

UEFA confirmed on Wednesday afternoon that City striker Mario Balotelli had been registered in time to be available for the tie, following his transfer from Inter Milan.

RAPID VIENNA v ASTON VILLA

Aston Villa caretaker-manager Kevin MacDonald has been forced into a number of changes for the Europa League play-off first leg with Rapid Vienna at the Gerhard Hanappi Stadium.

Centre-back Richard Dunne serves a one-game ban, while striker John Carew has a knee injury and joins Gabriel Agbonlahor, Carlos Cuellar (both hamstring) and James Collins (calf) on the sidelines.

However, MacDonald has opted to leave behind Stiliyan Petrov, Luke Young and Ashley Young, while there is no James Milner following his move to Manchester City.

It means a number of youngsters have been drafted in, including defenders James Collins Jnr and Eric Lichaj, midfielders Shane Lowry and Barry Bannan and Austrian striker Andreas Weimann.

LIVERPOOL v TRABZONSPOR

Javier Mascherano and Daniel Agger will both miss Liverpool's Europa League play-off first leg against Trabzonspor at Anfield.

Mascherano injured a calf muscle in Sunday's Barclays Premier League draw with Arsenal while Agger suffered a concussion in the same game.

Lucas or new signing Christian Poulsen are most likely to take over from Mascherano in midfield while Fabio Aurelio is in contention for Agger's spot at left-back.

Diego Cavalieri will provide back-up to goalkeeper Jose Reina as Brad Jones' move from Middlesbrough was not completed in time. Star striker Fernando Torres is pushing for a starting place after appearing from the bench against Arsenal on his return from a groin injury.
