England boost as United defender Brown is backed to return for finals

Sir Alex Ferguson has backed Wes Brown to return to action in four to six weeks - giving the Manchester United defender a great chance of being fit for the World Cup.[LNB]Brown broke a metatarsal in his left foot during United's laboured win at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday and had feared his dream of going to South Africa was over.[LNB]Ferguson, preparing his team to face AC Milan on Wednesday in the Champions League last 16 second leg at Old Trafford, confirmed the injury, but calmed fears.[LNB] Golden Brown: The Manchester United defender (right) lines up against Besiktas[LNB]'It's just unfortunate,' United manager Sir Alex Ferguson admitted. I hope to get him back for some of the season.'[LNB]In the absence of Liverpool's Glen Johnson, who is recovering from ankle ligament damage, Fabio Capello started with Brown at right back in the 3-1 victory over Egypt last week.[LNB]The England manager has few other options at right back and hopes to take Brown to South Africa because of his ability to also play at centre half.[LNB]The 30-year-old picked up the injury in a challenge with Wolves midfielder Matt Jarvis and left Molineux with a protective boot on the damaged foot.[LNB]As well as missing the return to Old Trafford of David Beckham with Milan, Brown will also sit out Barclays Premier League games against Fulham, Liverpool, Bolton and a potential title-decider against Chelsea on April 3.[LNB]Brown, who broke a metatarsal bone just over a year ago, would then face a race against time to face Blackburn on April 11 and derby rivals Manchester City a week later.[LNB]Brown's absence further adds to Ferguson's woes ahead of Wednesday night's crucial European encounter, which will see United defending a 3-2 advantage from the first leg at the San Siro.[LNB] Look who's back: Wayne Rooney trains with United at Carrington[LNB]Anderson (knee), Ryan Giggs (arm) and John O'Shea (leg) are also out, although Ferguson confirmed the in-form Wayne Rooney would be available after a kneeproblem.[LNB]'He is fit,' Ferguson said of Rooney.
