Edgy Reds snatch narrow victory
29 Aug 2010 - 17:14:39
Stuttering Liverpool were indebted to a Fernando Torres goal as Roy Hodgson's team secured their first Premier League win of the campaign in unconvincing fashion against West Brom.
The Spain international volleyed home Dirk Kuyt's 65th-minute cross as the Reds edged home 1-0 but the visitors will be rueing several good goalscoring chances of their own.
It was a much-improved away performance by the Baggies who slumped to a 6-0 hammering at Chelsea on the opening weekend of the campaign before responding with a fine 1-0 win over Sunderland last Saturday.
However, Roberto di Matteo's team ended the match with ten men after James Morrison was somewhat harshly dismissed in the closing stages after an ill-timed challenge on Torres.
Torres almost scored a second goal only to be denied by the much-maligned Scott Carson who blocked his far post shot at point-blank range, while Liverpool had claims for a late penalty for an apparent Gonzalo Jara handball waved away by the referee.
Earlier in the match, the Baggies had a penalty appeal of their own turned down even though Martin Skrtel appeared to pull Jonas Olsson back, while Marc-Antoine Fortune had a shot saved.
But it was Hodgson's side that eventually secured their first three-point haul of the campaign although they remain very much a work in progress at this early stage of the season.
