Dyer, Saha, Owen, Rosicky and Hargreaves - the race is on to become Sportsmail's official Sicknote

29 January 2009 00:11
Sportsmail has launched a hunt for a new Sicknote to replace Darren Anderton.[LNB] Thanks, you've all been great: Darren Anderton bows out of football with a goal[LNB] Anderton held the title as 'football's most notable sicknote' for 13 years after getting injured at Tottenham [LNB]then seemingly lurching from one physical crisis to another - but still managed to chalk up almost 500 matches, over 300 of which he amassed while at White Hart Lane.[LNB]But his decision to quit at the age of 37 has caused panic among physios, who fear their work levels could drop by as much as 85 per cent coupled with low demand for their services in these credit-crunching times.[LNB]So the race is on to replace Anderton with another high-profile injury-prone star and Sportsmail has drawn up a shortlist of candidates.[LNB]So here's who's in the running for the for the post even if you don't include Tottenham skipper Ledley King but cast your net further afield to the other parts of London.[LNB]KIERON DYER (West Ham)[LNB]The bookies' favourite after a 12-year career littered with injuries. The last time he played was on August 28 2007, his third match for new club West Ham[LNB]. Sadly, a tackle from Bristol Rovers' Joe Jacobson left Dyer with a badly broken leg and all he's done since is try and regain fitness.[LNB]In pre-season, Dyer was re-assessed but still shows no signs of a return to action.[LNB]Were it a one-off Dyer could just be perceived as unlucky but a little look at his injury table below shows just highly-rated he is among physios and doctors.[LNB]Bookies Joe Square rate Dyer 9/1on to be the new Sicknote, and it's easy to see why when you look at all his recent injuries.[LNB]DYER SITUATION - THIS LIST IS ENDLESS 2007 (West Ham)[LNB]August: Broken leg in two places.[LNB]April: Hamstring (while at Newcastle) [LNB]February: Flu (Newcastle) [LNB]2006 (Newcastle) [LNB]November: Cut leg[LNB]October: Eye injury[LNB]April: Hamstring[LNB]February: Hamstring[LNB]2005 (Newcastle) [LNB]August: Hamstring[LNB]July: Hamstring[LNB]April: Hamstring [LNB]February: Groin[LNB]January: Knee[LNB]  2004 (Newcastle) [LNB]December: Calf muscle[LNB]September: Hamstring [LNB]August: Hamstring[LNB]April: Hamstring[LNB]March: Hamstring[LNB]2003 (Newcastle) [LNB]October: Hamstring[LNB]August: Hamstring[LNB]May: Shin splints[LNB]March: Shin splints[LNB]March: Hamstring[LNB]February: Shin splints[LNB]2002 (Newcastle) [LNB]December: Calf[LNB]October: Back[LNB] September: Shin splints [LNB] VIDEO: Dyer injured playing for West Ham[LNB]LOUIS SAHA (Everton)[LNB]Whether he's in Liverpool[LNB], Manchester or London, Saha is a model of consistency. [LNB]Playing is an occupational hazard for a player very highly-rated by Manchester United[LNB]boss Sir Alex Ferguson but one he never seems to do for very long.[LNB]And unlike Dyer whose main weakness seems to be that hamstring, Saha has a salad of knocks, sprains, tweaks and twists he can call upon. [LNB]Bookies Paddy Hills has closed the book on Saha but although the smart money is still on Dyer, the Frenchman's lost of ailments would keep a lot of BUPA specialists in work.[LNB]KNOWING ME, KNOWING YOU - SAHA 2008 (Everton)[LNB]November: Hamstring[LNB]September: Calf muscle[LNB]August: Knee (Manchester United)[LNB]March: Hamstring (Manchester United)[LNB]March: Knee (Manchester United)[LNB]February: Knee cartilage (Manchester United)[LNB]2007 (Manchester United)[LNB]October: Knee[LNB]June: Knee[LNB]May: Knee[LNB]March: Hamstring[LNB]January: Groin[LNB]2006 (Manchester United)[LNB]November: Hamstring[LNB]October: Knee[LNB]April: Sprained ankle[LNB] 2005 (Manchester United)[LNB]August: Hamstring[LNB]March: Calf muscle injury[LNB]February: Knee[LNB]2004 (Manchester United)[LNB]November: Knee[LNB]September: Knee (twice)[LNB]August: MCL knee ligament[LNB]April: Achilles[LNB]March: Achilles[LNB]February: Calf muscle[LNB]2003 (Fulham)[LNB]April: Back[LNB]January: Hamstring[LNB]2002 (Fulham)[LNB]September: Hamstring [LNB] You have been warned: Louis Saha lies injured when a Fulham player[LNB]MICHAEL OWEN (Newcastle)[LNB]It's unlikely the star that sprinted through the Argentina defence in 1998 as an 18-year-old could even get out of bed without twisting something now.[LNB]Poor old Owen even fell over playing a pass at the 2006 World Cup and snapped his knee ligaments. That's bad luck and the sort of form that makes him a serious candidate to become the official FA Sicknote.[LNB]He is now facing another six weeks on the sidelines after breaking a bone in his ankle against Manchester City on January 28 2009, adding to his sadly-impressive list of ailments and breaks.[LNB][LNB][LNB] I'll be off then: Michael Owen prepares to hobble home from the 2006 World Cup[LNB] When he went to play in Spain for Real Madrid he remained virtually injury free but as you can see from his catalogue of aches and pains, a trip to the medical team is never that far away.[LNB]The fact that he was fit for a while and scoring goals for Newcastle [LNB]prompted Victor Corals to float Owen to 25/1 to be new Sicknote. They look great odds now.[LNB]OWEN, OWEN, GONE - PUT YOUR FEET UP MICHAEL2008 (Newcastle)[LNB]October: Groin[LNB]July: Mumps[LNB]July: Calf muscle[LNB]May: Virus[LNB]2007 (Newcastle) [LNB]November: Thigh[LNB]September: Groin[LNB]July: Thigh[LNB]2009 (Newcastle)[LNB]January: Ankle[LNB] 2006 (Newcastle) [LNB]July: Groin[LNB]June: ACL knee injury[LNB]May: Metatarsal fracture[LNB]April: Foot[LNB]2005 (Newcastle)[LNB]December: Metatarsal fracture[LNB]November: Groin[LNB]October: Hamstring [LNB]2004 (Liverpool)[LNB]March: Hamstring[LNB]2003 (Liverpool)[LNB]November: Thigh[LNB]November: Knee[LNB]October: Knee[LNB]April: Back[LNB]2002 (Liverpool)[LNB]December: Hamstring[LNB]November: Calf muscle[LNB] VIDEO: Owen crumples in a heap at the 2006 World Cup[LNB][LNB]TOMAS ROSICKY (Arsenal)[LNB]Nicknamed 'Little Mozart' the Czech Republic midfielder always looks composed on the pitch.[LNB]But in a three-year career with Arsenal [LNB]to date, Rosicky has become more friendly with the masseuses and ambulance drivers than team-mates, the latest hamstring injury threatening to keep him out until March next year - almost 14 months kicking his heels instead of kicking a ball.[LNB][LNB][LNB] It's agony: Rosicky contemplates another break [LNB] It even needed surgery last month when manager Arsene Wenger said Rosicky would be back in eight weeks. He won't and the lost of Arsenal injuries below is the reason why. Bookies Sid James are offering 12/1 against Rosicky becoming the new Sicknote because he still has so much to learn[LNB]ROSICKY- NOTE: HOW TOMAS HAS BEEN TANKED 2008[LNB]February: Hamstring[LNB]2007[LNB]November: Groin[LNB]September: Hamstring[LNB]July: Hamstring[LNB] April: Hamstring[LNB]March: Groin[LNB]2006[LNB]November: Hamstring[LNB]August: Groin[LNB] [LNB]May: Thigh [LNB] OWEN HARGREAVES (Manchester United)[LNB]Since signing from Bayern Munich last year, Hargreaves has got through plenty of reading because on the football front he's been a bit of a Saha.[LNB] And although the best Canadian import since Greg Rusedski is a rank outsider with bookies Green Hexagon, he can point to three instances of Jumpers Knee - caused by pressure on the joint following too much leaping from the ground - surgery on his knee in November means he'll miss the whole of the season.[LNB]That was £17m well spent. Did Bayern know something Fergie didn't? The next person in the market for the England midfielder should peruse the list below before signing a cheque.[LNB]OWEN, OWEN, GONE (OH NO I'VE USED THAT ONE) ALL INJURIES SUFFERED WHILE A MANCHESTER UNITED PLAYER[LNB]2008[LNB]September: Jumpers knee[LNB]July: Knee [LNB] 2007[LNB]December: Back[LNB]October: Jumpers knee[LNB]September: Thigh muscle[LNB]July: Jumpers knee [LNB] Injured again: This time for England [LNB]  More than just any old Irons - meet the Premier League XI that West Ham could have had[LNB]Boo-boys special: When fans turn on their own players[LNB]Vidic, Hyypia, terry et al - Sportsmail's guide to the Premier League head boys[LNB][LNB][LNB] [LNB]
