Dunkin' Donuts thought it was a good idea to replace Liverpool's eternal flames with coffee cups

Dunkin’ Donuts has apologised to Liverpool supporters after a competition it clearly thought would connect with fans got them more enraged than engaged.

Liverpool’s club crest has two flames on either side of it, memorialising those killed in the Hillsbrough disaster in 1989. Commercial partners Dunkin’ Donuts’ competition asked fans how they would change the crest, along with a picture of their own edit – turning the flames into what look like iced coffees or milkshakes.

Unsurprisingly, some fans weren’t happy.

A statement released by Dunkin’ Donuts said: “We apologise for any insensitivity regarding our tweet supporting an LFC-themed promotion featuring the LFC Crest.

“As a proud partner of LFC, we did not intend any offence, particularly to the club’s supporters. We have removed the tweet and halted the campaign immediately.”
