Dominic King: John W Henry needs to channel Liverpool FC traditions
Published : 20 Nov 2010 06:00:00
John W Henry 300 ONE of the great frustrations about the fast-moving modern world is the lack of traditional values, so it was hugely reassuring to hear some of John W Henry's latest words this week. Such has been the pace of events recently, it has been easy to lose track of the fact that New England Sports Ventures have only been Liverpool's owners for a mere 36 days but, in that period, Henry and Company have clearly learned a lot. True, some of their declarations have furrowed brows. That they raised the issue about the dreaded '39th game' has been seized upon by some critics, while others are baffled by the appointment of Damien Comolli, the club's Director Of Football Strategy. Henry clearly has an inkling that the approach Billy Beane used at the Oakland A's baseball team - which was subsequently chronicled in the book 'Moneyball' - will work in the Premier League and that radical idea leaves many cold. But while it is true business rather than raw emotion convinced Henry to push through his £300m deal to buy the Reds, the enlightening answer he gave to an interview with the excellent Red And White Kop website should provide comfort going forward.
