DOMINIC KING: Dreamers who live in a world of their own

IT is often said the fun has gone out of football so thank heavens for two 'colourful' characters giving Liverpudlians something to smile about this week.[LNB]While it is claimed actions speak louder than words, the rhetoric of Paul Duffen, once of Hull City now of the job centre, and the shrinking violet that goes by the name of Jermaine Pennant has proven that all wrong.[LNB]Let us start with Duffen, who was once linked with the post of Liverpool chief executive when the role was vacant during the summer - we can only be eternally thankful that he never ended up in these parts after one pearl of wisdom earlier in the week.[LNB]'Everything you do in life is about adding value,' he proclaimed. 'If you look at the squad Phil Brown has and what he will do with that this season compared possibly to the squad Rafa (Benitez) has got, I think you'll find Phil will come out on top in terms of how you add value to a group of footballers.'[LNB]Those words were delivered on Monday. By Wednesday he was looking for a new job after overseeing a catastrophic overspend at The KC Stadium and sticking by that tactical genius Brown, a manager victorious in four of his last 30 games.[LNB]We could go into analysing how absurd that statement was - one way, for example, would be to compare both clubs' most recent performances against Manchester United; Liverpool demolished them without their captain, Hull couldn't even beat Alex Ferguson's third team.[LNB]But sometimes it's simply better to let the facts speak for themselves. If Duffen really believed that Brown is better at enhancing a squad than Benitez, perhaps it's for the best he's been given a break.
