Heysel memorial[LNB]THE bells of Liverpool town hall tolled 39 times to remember those killed at Heysel.[LNB]On the eve of the 25th anniversary of the tragedy, guests - including representatives from Italy - lined in mournful silence to pay respects.[LNB]At the dignified commemoration service, the Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Hazel Williams, drew comparisons with Hillsborough.[LNB]She said: 'Today, we would like to send a message to the people of Turin and the wider footballing community that Liverpool acknowledges your loss, that we are sincere and take it to heart.[LNB]'We, as a city, know more than most of football-related tragedy and the scale of human suffering it brings.[LNB]'Many mistakes were made at Heysel and the behaviour of some so-called football fans is deplorable and inexcusable.[LNB]'But today is not about recriminations. It is about commemorating the 39 people who went to a football match and didn't come home.'[LNB]Fans, mainly Italian, were killed when a wall collapsed amid violent scenes shortly before Liverpool played Juventus in the European Cup final at Belgium's ageing national stadium.[LNB]City councillor Peter Millea, who was at the match, attended yesterday's service.[LNB]He said: 'I remember sitting in the stadium, looking to my right and seeing all this commotion.[LNB]'Everyone had been getting on so well so the way it all kicked off was just unbelievable.[LNB]'Ill never forget what I saw - bodies of people trampled upon, people falling over and getting crushed.[LNB]'It will never go away.'
