Destiny in our hands - Lucas

Midfielder Lucas Leiva predicts another special European night at Anfield as Liverpool seek the win against Basle which would put them through to the knockout stages of the Champions League.

The Reds could have made life much easier for themselves had they not lost to the Swiss back in October, in a dreadful performance lacking any spark, but that is unlikely to be repeated on Tuesday.

Liverpool's famous old ground has witnessed some eventful and historic matches over the years and, while a group-stage game against a useful but by no means unbeatable Swiss side would barely get a mention alongside those, the game itself will be just as crucial.

The requirement is simple. Anything other than a win and Liverpool are out of the competition at the first hurdle, having fought so hard to rejoin Europe's elite after a five-year absence.

"We are still very much alive and we can't wait for the game against Basle at home, which will be another very special European night for sure," Lucas said.

"If we win, we get through, so if you look at the positives we have it in our hands."

The 2-2 draw last time out against Ludogorets made no difference to what was needed at Anfield and, even though they conceded a very late equaliser, it was seen as a turning point as it ended a run of four defeats in all competitions.

Since then, Brendan Rodgers' side have picked up their form with some battling if not necessarily brilliant performances.

It is has given them the necessary morale boost heading into such a vital game.

"We didn't play fantastic football against Ludogorets, but we showed a lot of character and that is the only way at the moment," the Brazilian added.

"In the dressing room afterwards, it was a lot more positive, especially the desire we showed.

"I think after that result the confidence slowly got better, and as a result the flow of the team will get better, like last year.

"Hopefully everyone will get better and the confidence will get better.

"It was a difficult moment, but that was a good sign we wanted to still be alive in the group stage."
