13 March 2010 22:48
Graeme Souness, once manager of Rangers, Liverpool, Southampton and Newcastle - to name four of his old clubs - is defying the recession by splashing out £4.8million on buying a house in one the most expensive locations on the planet. [LNB]Souness will be just the latest football face to become a resident of Sandbanks, at Poole, in Dorset, when he buys a house on the tiny peninsula - dubbed the 'Monte Carlo of the South Coast' - with five en-suite bedrooms and its own cinema. [LNB]Protesters have raised fresh concernsabout the fate of trees and claimed newly-discovered archaeologicalmaterial could date back to Tudor times, but the odds are stackedagainst them blocking approval.[LNB]Kanu deal lawyer fined over rogue agent fee Another lawyer has been fined for paying an unlicensed agent in aPremier League transfer deal. Ashton Doherty was ordered to pay£10,000, plus £11,000 costs, by the Solicitors Disciplinary Panel forbringing the profession into disrepute in the course of working onKanu's move from Arsenal to West Bromwich Albion in 2004. [LNB]Doherty, now of SLS Solicitors but then of Knowles, told thetribunal that the £50,000 passed on to unlicensed agent Paul Okoye, from a total fee of £70,000 received from Albion, was for services tobe provided to the Nigeria star after the transfer. [LNB]But the SDT ruled that the £50,000 was a commission on the deal.Doherty will wait for the tribunal's written judgment before decidingwhether to appeal. [LNB]Crunch time: Sir Clive Woodward [LNB][LNB]Last week it emerged that the SDT had fined Timothy Drukker £15,000for 'conduct unbecoming a solicitor' in the transfer of ShaunWright-Phillips from Manchester City to Chelsea in 2005, the unnamed17th deal which Quest failed to clear in their probe into two years ofPremier League deals.[LNB]Crunch time is approaching for theOlympic Coaching Programme of Sir Clive Woodward. A raft ofappointments, a move to new offices and costs from the Winter Games inVancouver have increased the pressure on the British OlympicAssociation's tight finances. [LNB]Woodward's pet project received £1.25m from the £10m pumped intoTeam 2012 by lead sponsor Visa last year and is funded through 2010.But unless other backers can be found soon, the BOA will have toughdecisions to make later this year.[LNB]AND FINALLY... God moves in mysterious ways, but notby bike, it seems. Cycling's Tour of Britain 2010 was due to finishwith an eye-catching ride past some of London's most famous landmarkson September 18, but Pope Benedict's visit to the city on the same daymeans the event will now be shifted to the less spectacular setting ofRichmond Park. Much to the annoyance of Sky, who were looking forwardto broadcasting some money shots of their expensively-assembled roadteam. [LNB]
