Charles Sale: Gary Neville's life story a matter of opinion

25 January 2010 00:08
Publishers Transworld have won the race for what will be the most opinionated autobiography of any current Premier League star - the official life story of Manchester United club captain Gary Neville.[LNB]The book, for which Neville negotiated his own terms, will not be published until after he leaves Old Trafford, which could be either the end of this season or next. [LNB]He has always maintained his football memoirs would only be written after his playing career has finished.[LNB] Story maker: Gary Neville will pen his United memoirs when his playing days finish[LNB]When it appears it will be controversial, such is Neville's innate ability to stir things up. [LNB]Even his obscure Times of Malta column provoked the feud with Manchester City's Carlos Tevez that has added even more spice to their Carling Cup semi-final second leg on Wednesday.[LNB]Transworld also published the big-selling autobiographies of Liverpool's Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher. You can guarantee there won't be too many copies of Neville's book sold on Merseyside, given his well-documented dislikeof Scousers.[LNB] Sven Goran Eriksson, who has been on the brink of leaving Notts County since before Christmas due to the club's financial meltdown, has stayed on far longer than expected on a relatively meagre annual salary of £250,000. [LNB]It is clear director of football Eriksson really wants the five-year plan of reaching the Premier League to work. [LNB] Notts leaving: Sven Goran Eriksson is enjoying his time living in Nottingham[LNB]But club insiders also report that lothario Eriksson is making the most of living in Nottingham, where the ratio of men to women has been put at 1 to 3. [LNB]Sven was guest of honour at a Burns Night party at a military barracks on Saturday night where his pulling opportunities would have been limited.[LNB] Former Hull City executive chairman Paul Duffen, who is facing serious allegations of financial mismanagement that include taking bungs from agents during his time in charge, is due to appear on Gabby Logan's 5 Live show today.[LNB]It had been expected, in the circumstances, that Duffen (right) would have withdrawn from a long-standing invitation to be part of the regular sports panel discussions. [LNB]But he is happy to remain on the guest list and is due to read out a short statement about his personal position regarding the Hull accusations before joining in a general sports debate.[LNB] FIFA president Sepp Blatter, who will stand for a fourth term next year, says he doesn't want to experience a mud-slinging exercise again - referring to his acrimonious battle with the Isa Hayatou camp, which included the FA, in 2002. [LNB]But a war of words now looks inevitable for Blatter such are the splits developing in the FIFA executive committee. [LNB]Blatter also told a Swiss newspaper that he expects video technology, which he has long resisted, to be in place for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.[LNB] Cook up on the cardsManchester City's hapless chief executive Garry Cook, whose latest gaffe was to say his club will become 'the biggest and best in the world', has a Big Brother-style opportunity to make more ludicrous comments.[LNB]TV production company Endemol, responsible for Big Brother and its diary room confessional, have been given special access at Manchester City for a documentary charting the changes since the Abu Dhabi ownership takeover - and there will be short odds on Cook putting his foot in it again.[LNB] Reality check: Big Brother makers Endemol will work with Manchester City chief executive Garry Cook for a documentary charting the mega-rich club's changes [LNB]However, Endemol were not responsible for broadcasting Cook's upbeat forecast to City fans in New York. The CEO believed he was speaking at a private function despite the presence of a TV camera team. [LNB]Cook was in the aptly named Mad Hatter because City's marketing team had the idea of displaying blue plaques at their supporters gathering points around the globe.[LNB] ITV Sport broadcast four live FA Cup games and two highlights shows over the weekend, yet the lead sports news item on Saturday night was Wayne Rooney's four Premier League goals against Hull. [LNB]This shows the editorial independence of ITV News, an admirable contrast to Sky Sports, who ignore events they don't show, and that the FA Cup fourth round is less important news than one Premier League game, even for the rights holders.[LNB]   More from Charles Sale... Charles Sale: Tennis chiefs hire Stavros Flatley comic duo22/01/10 Charles Sale: Chelsea face Pitch battle to oust Richard King21/01/10 Charles Sale: Eggert Magnusson will have the write of reply!20/01/10 Charles Sale: Manchester United save face by silencing the twits19/01/10 Charles Sale: LMA chief Richard Bevan calls for bosses to be based at Burton 18/01/10 Charles Sale: Revolt over FA's fat-cat salaries17/01/10 Charles Sale: Micah hoping for super agent of change15/01/10 Charles Sale: Manchester City gaffe leaves United red-faced 14/01/10 VIEW FULL ARCHIVE [LNB]
