Cesc Fabregas: Arsenal need Xabi Alonso
"We need someone in the middle to make competition and make a difference, plus give us a new dimension," said Fabregas. "I think that is all we need. The rest is perfect. Xabi would be great. He's experienced and can score goals. I'm sure the boss is aware of that fact." Alonso, who has attracted the interest of Real Madrid, was expected to join Arsenal last year to free up money for Gareth Barry but has enjoyed an excellent season, with Rafael Benitez insistent that he does not intend to lose the Spain midfielder. "The situation is clear, we do not want to sell our best players and that includes Xabi," he said. "There is no agreement with Real and we want him to be part of our plans going forward. Xabi's agent came to see me recently to talk about the future. It was a surprise for me and I pointed out to him there were three years left on Xabi's contract. "I asked him if the player was happy in Liverpool and he said yes. It was a short meeting." Fabregas, the Arsenal captain, has also defended Arsene Wenger following recent criticism of the team from supporters and club shareholders. "He has been criticised for some things that are not even his fault," he said. "He puts all the responsibility on himself which is probably why he gets criticised undeservedly. He is such a nice person and he is so committed to the club that he will always stand up and take the blame himself, rather than putting it on other people who are probably the ones who deserve it."
