Carragher to miss qualifier
20 Aug 2006 - 13:30:07
Jamie Carragher will miss the second leg of Liverpool's Champions League qualifier against Maccabi Haifa because of an ankle injury.
The England defender was forced to limp out of the Reds' 1-1 draw against Sheffield United on Saturday following an uncompromising challenge by Rob Hulse.
An X-ray revealed the injury is not serious, but Carragher will not travel with the rest of the squad for the third qualifying round tie, which is being played in Kyiv as Israeli teams are not currently allowed to stage European games in their own country.
He is likely to be joined on the sidelines by John Arne Riise, who also suffered an ankle injury during the Premiership opener at Bramall Lane.
The Norwegian's injury is not serious, but Reds boss Rafael Benitez said: "Almost sure Carragher won't play, while with Riise we will have to wait and see, but he is in pain."
