Carragher slams fixture chaos
24 Apr 2010 - 09:47:44
Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has criticised the Premier League after forcing the Reds to face West Ham United on Monday evening.
Although the Merseysiders won 3-0, the contest was just 72 hours before their Europa League semi-final first leg defeat at Atletico Madrid.
Rafael Benitez's men had to take a gruelling trip to the Spanish capital by coach and train due to the air travel disruptions brought about by the recent volcanic eruption in Iceland and Carragher believes the league chiefs haven't done enough to take care of their European hopes.
Speaking to Liverpool Echo, he said: "The worst thing for us was playing on Monday night.
"You hear all about the Premier League wanting English clubs to do well in Europe.
"Well, we've just played Monday and Thursday. When Inter Milan are in the Champions League, they play on a Friday night; their league does everything to help them.
"Playing on Monday night was a joke. That was more of a thing than all the travelling we did, which, really, wasn't that bad at all."
