Capello has the last laugh as Gerrard proves Spurs boss Redknapp wrong

England coach Fabio Capello appeared to disprove Harry Redknapp's theory that Steven Gerrard cannot operate on the left of the midfield after the Liverpool man's impressive display in England's 4-0 drubbing of Slovakia. Capello had a recent falling out with Spurs boss Redknapp over Ledley King's inclusion in the England squad, yet the seeds for their frosty relationship were sowed back in the first friendly of the season. Redknapp called Capello's selection of King 'mad' due to the Spurs defender's knee problems and he was later withdrawn from the squad. But Redknapp's words were tame compared to his anger over how the Italian deployed Gerrard on the left flank against the Czech Republic in the disappointing 2-2 draw at Wembley seven months ago. He said: 'Steven Gerrard is not a left-winger. We are killing him.He has to be in the middle of the pitch and be part of the game.' However, Capello may just want to send Redknapp, who was on holiday in Spain, a tape of the first half of Gerrard's performance against Slovakia to make the point once and for all that he really does know best. The same could not be said for Aaron Lennon, who showed great pace on his third start yet little composure with his final ball. Both players got45 minutes each to impress, but the decision to take Lennon off at the break was with Wednesday's World Cup qualifier against Ukraine in mind. Cappelo said: 'I decided before the game that Gerrard and Lennon would only play until half-time because both are in fantastic moment sof form and shouldn' t play too much so they can be fresh for the next game. He (Lennon) is very quick against defenders and they just want to bring him down.'
