Capello has fearsome aura of Shankly, insists England coach Clemence

Fabio Capello is the most ruthless England manager for a generation and has an authority akin to Bill Shankly, says Ray Clemence, England's goalkeeping coach. Clemence worked as a player or coach for every England manager of recent times other than Graham Taylor, and played for Shankly's great Liverpool team. And he isadamant he has never seen anything like Capello in terms of the command he has over the players. Clemence said: 'Fabio has been the most authoritative that I've seen. That's not to the detriment of those who have gone before, but he's probably the first one I've seen since I've been on the coaching staff who has really torn into a player after a game or at half-time. 'I think others, understandably, may have thought that they were only borrowing a player, so there's no sense ripping into him as he's going back to his club tomorrow. But Fabio just tells it as he sees it. 'He's done it more than once and it's been different players. 'Knowing the manner of the man now, it doesn't surprise me. But the first time I saw it, I was very surprised. From day one, he had that respect. He has that aura about him. He'll walk into a room and you immediately think, 'I'm going to listen to this fella'. And he hasn't even opened his mouth. Shanks was like that.' England need just two points to secure their World Cup place in South Africa 2010, but Clemence, speaking at the launch of the Nationwide Football Annual, said: 'There's still a lot to be done. It is important we are confident but realistic with our expectations.'
