Blues take derby honours

Liverpool's new era under John Henry and Tom Werner began with another embarrassing defeat as they went down 2-0 to Everton in the Merseyside derby at Goodison. Henry took his place in the director's box following the completion of his high-profile purchase of the club from Tom Hicks and George Gillett, but could only look on as Tim Cahill and Mikel Arteta consigned the Reds to another week in the drop zone. The Blues, who have started to improve over recent weeks following a shaky start, flew out of the traps and hogged possession in the early stages, with England defender Phil Jagielka driving over when well placed. They deservedly took the lead with 34 minutes on the clock, when Seamus Coleman drove into the box and pulled the ball back for the waiting Cahill who slammed home. The home side's delight doubled after the break when Arteta rammed home from the edge of the area after Liverpool failed to clear their lines. And despite Liverpool attempting to close the gap, with Fernando Torres still off-colour, they were unable to do so.
