Benitez sounds Benfica warning
31 Mar 2010 - 10:55:32
Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has warned his players that Thursday's Europa League clash with Benfica will be as tough as anything they have faced in the Champions League.
The Reds travel to Portugal for the first leg of their quarter-final tie on Thursday evening and Benitez is expecting a thorough examination.
Four years ago Liverpool were knocked out of the Champions League at the last 16 stage by Benfica, while the Lisbon side have already accounted for Merseyside rivals Everton during this season's Europa League.
Injured defensive duo Fabio Aurelio and Martin Skrtel will both miss the first leg at the Stadium of Light.
"As always we have to get the balance right between defending and going forward. I think we are stronger than when we last played them, but they are stronger too," explained the Spaniard.
"They still have Luisao, who scored against us the last time, and (Pablo) Aimar who I know well.
"They are a good side who are top of the league ahead of Porto - and with Porto being in the Champions League it shows you how strong Benfica are.
"We will play in a fantastic stadium in a fantastic atmosphere and we know it will be difficult fixture. It will be a good European occasion."
