Benitez not giving up on fourth

    20 Apr 2010 - 07:20:36

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez still believes fourth place and a return to the Champions League is possible following Monday night's 3-0 victory over West Ham United.

The Reds roared out of the blocks at Upton Park and first-half goals from Hammers old-boy Yossi Benayoun and David N'Gog got the ball rolling.

Robert Green's 59th minute own-goal when Sotirios Kyrgiakos poked a Steven Gerrard free-kick against the post and it went in off the helpless goalkeeper capped a miserable night for the struggling home side.

The Reds leapfrogged Aston Villa back into sixth place and an upbeat Benitez spoke of the possibility of a top-four finish and a return to the Champions League at full-time.

Liverpool are now five points behind Tottenham in fourth, having played one game more than the north London club.

"We have to keep doing our job. It will be more difficult now because Tottenham won (against Chelsea on Saturday), normally you would not expect them to win," explained Benitez.

"But we have to be in a good position if they make a mistake.

"West Ham started the game pushing but as soon as we scored the first goal it was easier, we had more chances and we scored the second goal and the third one killed the game.

"It was important to score and control the game."
