Benitez hailed by Mascherano
26 Mar 2010 - 11:49:58
Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano believes he is a better player for working under Rafael Benitez.
Reds boss Benitez finds himself under pressure following his side's domestic and European struggles this season.
Reports claim the Spaniard could be forced out of Anfield should the Reds fail to finish in the Premier League's top four and secure a lucrative place in next season's Champions League.
But in a bid to ease the criticism of Benitez, Mascherano has lent his support to the embattled Reds boss.
"All managers have different ways of working," said the Argentina captain, who is close to agreeing a new contract to extend his stay at the club.
"Rafa is totally different from (Argentina coach) Diego Maradona and the other managers I've had.
"For three and a half years I've been working with Rafa and I can now say I'm a better player and a better person from when I arrived here.
"That's down to Rafa and his staff."
