Benitez drops Reds title hint
15 Mar 2009 - 09:48:30
Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez believes his buoyant side are now right back in the Premier League title race following Saturday's 4-1 thrashing of Manchester United.
The Reds followed up their 4-0 Champions League rout of Real Madrid in midweek with another superb display after coming from behind at Old Trafford.
Fernando Torres fired his side level after capitalising on a rare United defensive mistake before Steven Gerrard's penalty sent them in 2-1 up at half-time.
In the second half a Fabio Aurelio free-kick after the home side had been reduced to ten men with the sending off of Nemanja Vidic and a 90th-minute lob from substitute Andrea Dossena completed the scoring.
The result saw the Reds move to within four points of United at the top of the table and, despite conceding the Old Trafford club are still in the driving seat, Benitez suggested his side were now back in the mix in the title run-in.
"This week we have beaten two of the top sides in Europe in Real Madrid and Manchester United, and scored four goals in both games so that is fantastic and again, we have to be really pleased," said Benitez.
When asked if the Reds are now back in the title race, he added: "It depends on United at the end because they have to lose some games and we have to win almost every one, so we are in a better position.
"We have more belief, more confidence and we have to get three points now in every game and then see what happens.
"In football anything can happen. Clearly it will be difficult but we can win every game.
"We always approach every game to win and we can beat anyone as we have shown this week. You can always win every game when you have good players, good supporters behind you and a very good staff.
"We need to be consistent, focused and concentrate on each game and don't make mistakes."
