Benitez committed to Reds
10 Jun 2008 - 13:28:40
Rafael Benitez insists he is '100 per cent committed' to Liverpool despite suggestions that his summer spending will be curbed by poor financial results.
The Anfield club recently reported losses of £33million for the financial year ending July 31 2007, with the knock-on effect expected to be a reduction in funds available to the Spaniard.
However, the former Valencia coach claims he remains excited by the prospect of leading the Merseyside club and transforming them into genuine challengers for the Premier League title.
"I said at the end of the season that I was very happy here and I will say it again," Benitez told the club's official website.
"The supporters have been absolutely magnificent with me, the staff are working very hard and I would not have brought players like Fernando Torres and the young players we have here if I did not have a long-term vision for the club.
"Now is not the time to be saying goodbye."
Meanwhile, Benitez has revealed he is ready to offload some fringe members of his squad in a bid to raise funds for new players.
The likes of Xabi Alonso, Peter Crouch, John Arne Riise, Steve Finnan, Scott Carson and Danny Guthrie are all believed to be under threat.
"If we had a lot of money to spend it would obviously be better. But if we don't it doesn't matter," he continued.
"It is not about buying the most expensive players, it is about buying the right players and we can sell some players to get the others we need.
"We have the spine of the team and we just need others in other positions.
"Some teams around us are spending £20million and £30million on one or two players. But the important thing is to get the right players and my staff are working hard to do that."
