Rafa Benitez drew inspiration from the Kop anthem as he prepared for the biggest game of his tenure as Liverpool manager.

His side desperately need to win here tonight after taking just three points from their first three Champions League group games, but their chances of progressing beyond the first round have been seriously undermined by an injury crisis.

Benitez, under pressure after six defeats in seven games, quoted from You'll NeverWalk Alone in a tense pre-match press conference at the Stade de Gerland.

Asked if he was still the best manager for Liverpool, he said: 'I am really pleased to be here and I want to be here for a long time.

'And when you walk through a storm you hold your head up high and we will try to holdour heads up high tomorrow.'

Benitez said he expected Fernando Torres to start despite suffering with a 'sportsman's hernia'. 'He is getting better,' he said.

'After the Manchester United game he needed four days to recover, but after Fulham he felt better and today he feels better still. The doctor said it was a situation we need to manage and he might not yet need surgery.'
