Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez fears Steven Gerrard may need surgery to solve his groin problem.

The England midfielder has missed Liverpool's last two matches and appears set to sit out this weekend's meeting with Fulham.

The 29-year-old suffered the injury in a World Cup qualifier against Ukraine three weeks ago, and has managed just 25 minutes on the field since.

Gerrard made an initial return against Lyon in the Champions League, but limped off in the first half.

There was better news for Liverpool with regard to Fernando Torres, however, who looks set to return at Craven Cottage.

"Both have to keep going," said Benitez. "Gerrard is still working with the physio so we will see. Hopefully, Torres will be okay, but for Gerrard maybe it more difficult."
