'Beach ball' goal referee Mike Jones dropped from Premier League duty

Sunderland beat Liverpool 1-0 thanks to a fifth-minute goal from Darren Bent which beat Pepe Reina only after striking a beach ball thrown from the crowd by a Liverpool fan. [LNB]It later emerged that Jones should have ruled the goal out and, instead, ordered a free-kick after the ball struck an 'outside agent'. [LNB]The PGMO, who refuse to talk about individual appointments, will point to the fact that he is not the only referee in Premier League action last weekend who is working outside the top flight. [LNB]Each weekend, the PGMO are committed to appointing up to five referees at games outside the Premier League, and Jones is not the only referee outside the top flight. [LNB]Mark Clattenburg, who took charge of the game between Manchester United and Bolton, is at another Championship game, between Millwall and Leeds, but that could be because of the potential volatility of the fixture.
