BBC says sorry to Wolves fans, blaming power cut for Match of the Day highlights farce

Wolves have received an apology from Match of the Day over their coverage of Wednesday night's shock 1-0 victory over Liverpool.[LNB]Irate supporters inundated the BBC with complaints after only brief highlights were shown of the triumph at Anfield, secured thanks to Stephen Ward's splendid 56th-minute strike.[LNB]The programme editor, Paul Armstrong, wrote an open letter to Wolves supporters, outlining the reasons why the club was short-changed when both other fixtures in the Barclays Premier League, at Wigan and Chelsea, were not disrupted as badly.[LNB] Blink and you'll miss it: Stephen Ward (left) celebrates scoring the winning goal against Liverpool[LNB]He wrote: 'As Gary Lineker explained at the start of the programme, we had a power cut at Television Centre which meant we lost pictures and recording for most of the second half of our matches.[LNB]'The Wigan and Chelsea games were BBC outside broadcasts, so we were able to record the coverage and commentary in our vans at the end of the game and edit most of the major incidents together once power was restored.'[LNB]Aware of the strength of feeling in the Black Country after Wolves' first win at Anfield since Steve Mardenborough gave Graham Hawkins's side a 1-0 victory in January 1984, Armstrong blamed 'technical, rather than editorial reasons' for the error. [LNB]Out to tame the Wolves: West Ham boss Avram Grant [LNB]'Liverpool versus Wolves was a Sky live game and while they very kindly sent us the major incidents again once their broadcast was finished, and our power was restored, we were unable to reflect the finer details of the second half.[LNB]'Power was restored in time to record the post-match interviews, so we ran a lengthy excerpt of Mick McCarthy's interview and paid tribute to a fantastic win.[LNB]'Our technical problems were exacerbated by the fact it was a Wednesday night game, rather than Saturday afternoon and we had less than an hour to retrieve the bare bones of the story. [LNB]'We would like to apologise to any Wolves fans who were left disappointed by Match of the Day on the night and would like to assure them that the shortness of the edit was for technical, rather than editorial, reasons.'[LNB]Meanwhile, Avram Grant wants revenge for seeing two points slip away at Molineux when his bottom-of-the-table West Ham meet Wolves at Upton Park today.[LNB]With just a point separating the two teams, the West Ham boss is still incensed by the decision to disallow Frederic Piquionne's last-minute effort for handball in the 1-1 draw in October.[LNB]West Ham were also beaten 3-1 at Upton Park by Mick McCarthy's side last March, a result that cranked up the pressure on ex-Hammers boss Gianfranco Zola.[LNB]Grant said: 'I think they owe us something because we scored against them a goal that was disallowed in the last moment.[LNB]'Wolves would be behind us (in the table) but for the decision of the referee.'[LNB] West Ham v WOLVES: Kevin Doyle amongst absentees to miss battle at the bottomWEST HAM v Wolves: Avram Grant boosted by the return of Valon BehramiWest Ham agree salary with Keane but hit stumbling block over loan feeBag a bargain in the sales!
