Bans and injuries expose Liverpool's lack of depth

The Liverpool fans pleas to get Gerrard to Wembley for this seasons FA Cup Final no longer need to continue. That is the good news. They will play Aston Villa on April 19 in London for a chance to reach the competitions final. However, last nights hard fought 1-0 win at Ewood Park exposed a great concern regarding Liverpool’s future success. Their lack of depth was sorely exposed. Without Lallana, Markovic, Gerrard and Can they mightily struggled against The Rovers who without a few outstanding Simon Mignolet saves could have hoped to replace Liverpool as Wembley Stadium semi-finalists.

It is fair to say that The Reds were missing more names than is likely to happen at any one moment for an extended period of time. However, with Gerrard on his way out this summer the concern is still very valid. Joe Allen has not convinced on Merseyside and Lucas Leiva, who I feel is a very underrated worker, has not seemed to be in favor for a long time now.

Concern over Liverpool’s depth may not be on the minds of the majority of Liverpool supporters at the moment. However, just a few days ago Brendan Rodgers admitted that their fight for fourth spot is virtually over. Then just a few days later he expressed how important finishing in the Champion’s League spots is in terms of new player recruitment. I think we have seen with Liverpool, and for that matter a number of other teams in the past few years, that this sentiment is quite valid.

Manchester City’s form of late may just give Liverpool a glimmer of hope in attaining fourth position. But, as for where the future lies at Anfield, in the spirit of their upcoming trip to Wembley, que sera sera.
