Avi Cohen given fond farewell as thousands turn out for former Liverpool defender's funeral

Thousands of mourners joined Avi Cohen's funeral procession to say goodbye to the former Liverpool defender on Wednesday.[LNB]Cohen, 54, died after suffering severe head injuries in a motorcycle accident in Tel Aviv last week.[LNB]Last respects: The coffin was on display at the national stadium in Tel Aviv - where Cohen starred as a player[LNB] A ceremony was held at the national stadium in the Israeli city - the scene of some of his most memorable moments with his boyhood club Maccabi Tel Aviv.[LNB]'It was a big, big shock for us that Avi passed away. For the family, for the friends and of course for the nation because Avi was the captain of the national team and he was a hero,' said former Israel goalkeeper Bonnie Ginsburg who, like Cohen, played at Glasgow Rangers.[LNB] Tribute: Avi Cohen's son Tamir said an emotional farewell to his father surrounded by family, friends and fans[LNB]Ginsburg and other Maccabi and Israel colleagues carried Cohen's body to its final resting place at a cemetery north of Tel Aviv where thousands of mourners witnessed the burial.[LNB]Cohen was the first Israeli to play in the English top flight when he signed with Liverpool in 1979.
