Arsenal v Liverpool: live

13 December 2009 15:38
FULL TIME: Liverpool 1-2 Arsenal[LNB]Six months ago, Andrei Arshavin needed to score four goals to earn his side a point at Anfield. Today, just one was good enough for all three. It was a goal worthy of winning any match, and a goal which means Liverpool have now lost six Premier League games this season and 10 overall.[LNB]Andrey Arshavin welcomed to Arsenal in trademark fashion by Nik BendtnerThe Ashes: England v Australia live, second Test day fiveThe Ashes: England v Australia live, second Test day fourThey were at full strength today, too, which makes Arsenal's achievement all the more impressive.[LNB]Fabregas: "The boss screamed at us like I've never seen us at half-time. He said we were not fit to wear the Arsenal shirt, and he was right. We were not good."[LNB]90+1 min: The injured Andrei Arshavin is replaced by Jack Wilshere. Last chance now for Liverpool to avoid another incredibly painful home defeat. [LNB]89 min: Torres is first to Carragher's deep cross, but his header never threatens Almunia's goal. Liverpool's crossing hasn't been good enough to exploit Arsenal's lack of height. Four minutes added time.[LNB]85 min: Signs of frustration all over the park for Liverpool now. Gerrard screams at Howard Webb but he won't get a free-kick for running straight into Traore like that. Lucas is cautioned for a tug on Fabregas in the centre circle. [LNB]81 min: Third chage for Benitez as Phillipe Degen replaces Glen Johnson, who's faded as this game's gone on. [LNB]80 min: Agger's backheel volley is wide of the upright. Decent effort from the defender from Auerlio's free-kick, but it's a rare chance for Liverpool. Almunia hasn't had a save to make this afternoon. Ngog is playing alongside Torres while Gerrard moves out wide. Nasri is booked for kicking the ball away. [LNB]76 min: Better from Liverpool. Benayoun and Gerrard involved as Arsenal's defence is tested, but they hold firm for now. David Ngog is on for Benayoun. [LNB]72 min: Arshavin goes close again for Arsenal. Takes the ball from Nasri, finds a yard and clips a crisp shot straight at Reina. Liverpool really haven't responded to Arsenal's assault. They seem slightly stunned. [LNB]68 min: Traore clears well after Kuyt streers a dangerous ball into the area. It's game over for the ineffective Walcott, who's replaced by Diaby. [LNB]65 min: So Aquilani replaces Mascherano as Liverpool seek a way back into this game. Be a monumental win for Arsenal, this, given what's happened elsewhere this weekend. [LNB]63 min: Aquilani has got the nod from Benitez. [LNB]61 min: If we're not at boiling point yet, then we're not far off either. Benayoun has the Kop on its feet by cutting inside Sagna but he's prevented from shooting by Vermaelen. 4-4? [LNB]58 min: Liverpool 1-2 ArsenalAndrei Arshavin! Again! That's five goals in one and a half games at Anfield. it's another wonderful goal from the Russian too. Fabregas's deep cross from the right finds Arshavin's feet. His right-foot control is instant, and his finish is past Reina before he can move. [LNB]53 min: Arsenal have been much feistier since the break and a frustrated Mascherano eventually picks up a card for hauling down Fabregas. [LNB]50 min: Liverpool 1-1 Arsenal Own goal from Glen Johnson draws Arsenal level. What a mess. Nasri's cross causes chaos in the Liverpool defence, and after Carragher can only get a toe on the ball, Johnson is unable to sort his feet out and ends up prodding it past the stranded Reina. Huge bonus that for Arsenal. [LNB]47 min: Reina saves at his near post from Fabregas - half a chance there for Arsenal as Fabregas finds space after cutting in from the left. All set up by another good surge from Sagna. [LNB]Half-time: Liverpool 1-0 Arsenal. Any way back, then, for Arsenal? Well, Liverpool's defending this season suggests so, but at the moment they don't look like making an impact. No changes at the break. [LNB]44 min: Walcott loses possession far too easily in the centre of the mark, where Mascherano and Lucas have bullied Wenger's side out of this game. This has been really poor from Arsenal - complete lack of threat. [LNB]40 min: LIVERPOOL 1-0 ARSENALDirk Kuyt gives Liverpool the lead as Arsène Wenger blows his top. At what, I'm not quite sure. Scrappy goal really, but the lead is deserved. Aurelio's free kick fizzed and dipped into the area, and Almunia could only get a punch on the ball under pressure from Lucas. That punch fell to Kuyt, who chested then prodded it into the net. [LNB]38 min: Xabi Alonso is back at Anfield as a spectator. Much like Aquilani, then, the player signed to replace him. [LNB]34 min: Denilson floats in Arsenal's first real shot on target, but it's a back-pass to Reina. [LNB]33 min: Torres tumbles in the box, again under close inspection from Gallas, but Howard Webb says no once again. This time, though, he's correct to do so. [LNB]29 min: Torres leaves Gallas in his wake but a flag saves Arsenal. Liverpool are much more willing to play the long cross field ball, and Arsenal's approach seems a little ponderous in comparison. [LNB]25 min: Big worry for Mascherano here, who's gone down clutching his left knee. Physio is on and Mascherano's limping off for treatment. Gallas also appears to have a problem, but both are back on for now. [LNB]22 min: Aside from Gerrard and Torres, Johnson is regularly Liverpool's most advanced - and most dangerous - player. Swapping Walcott to the left flank to occupy him defensively wouldn't be the worst move for Arsenal... [LNB]18 min: Better from Arsenal. Sagna advances down the right flank, causing Carragher to divert the ball behind for a corner. [LNB]15 min: Arsenal really struggling to find a way through Liverpool's significant defensive shield. Arshavin is continuing to float out in search of the ball, leaving acres behind him which Arsenal are failing to fill. Liverpool look dangerous on the counter with Gerrard really in the mood. They look good today, Liverpool. [LNB]12 min: You lucky boy, William! Gerrard is denied a clear penalty after taking a tumble over Gallas. That's a pen, I'm afraid. Poor call. Liverpool bang on top now. [LNB]10 min: Anfield erupts as Mascherano is pulled up for a manly shoulder thump on Nasri. Torres then fluffs Liverpool's first real chance after Gerrard feeds a perfect sliced cross into his feet. Torres' side-foot is on target but straight at Almunia. [LNB]6 min: Johnson links up well with Torres but Song's doing a decent job of breaking up attacks in front of the Arsenal defence. No alarms for either side so far... [LNB]3 min: Arsenal's first corner is, somewhat unsurprisingly, headed clear by the Liverpool defence. [LNB]2 min: Cracking open start. Arshavin is Arsenal's most advanced attacking player, as expected, supported by Walcott and Nasri. [LNB]15.55: Arsenal can return to third place with a win today, while Liverpool will climb above Tottenham into fifth if they can win by two clear goals. Should they do that, their fans will be toasting one man tonight... OK, we're under way... [LNB]15.50: Alberto Aquilani: this year's Robbie Keane? [LNB]15.45: The Telegraph's Alan Smith: "Carragher and Agger will have no one to mark. Arsenal are playing a formation with no strikers." [LNB]15.40: Odds update: Fancy another 4-4 draw? Available at 150/1. Liverpool @ 6/5, Arsenal 12/5 and the draw at 9/4. [LNB]15.30: So can Liverpool complete an excellent weekend for the Premier League's small fry against Arsenal?! Following some remarkable performances from Everton, Villa and Wolves, I guess anything is possible.... [LNB]Liverpool: Reina, Johnson, Carragher, Agger, Aurelio, Mascherano, Lucas, Kuyt, Gerrard, Benayoun, Torres. Subs: Cavalieri, Aquilani, Insua, Ngog, Degen, Skrtel, Dossena. [LNB]Arsenal: Almunia, Sagna, Gallas, Vermaelen, Traoré, Fabregas, Song, Denilson, Walcott, Arshavin, Nasri. Subs: Fabianski, Diaby, Eduardo, Vela, Ramsey, Silvestre, Wilshere. [LNB]Referee: Howard Webb (S Yorkshire).[LNB]So that's Torres' first start since November 4 then, and it means Liverpool have a first-choice side out there. Arsène Wenger, seemingly, persevering with his 4-6-0 formation.... [LNB]
